The Michael Faraday Primary School was the flagship projectfor and the first part of the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate inSouthwark, London. It replaced a defunct 1970’s school building and nowprovides a Primary School, a Nursery and some Adult education facilities.
The building is arranged around a main central hub named the‘Living Room’ which houses an open plan breakout space and an enclosed smallhall called ‘The Rock’. All the classrooms spill out onto this area with ‘shopfront’ facades and signs. There is also a larger hall used for dining andsports which can be reached through a covered walkway.
The project achieved a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating and used aground source heat pump that contributed to the building achieving a 20% carbonreduction.
